To register a .ie domain certain criteria must be met by an applicant.

See the .IE Domain Name Registration Guide below to view the applicant classes and the criteria that must be met by each class of applicant.

To register a business name as a .ie domain the Registered Business Name number or a receipt from the CRO for the business name registration is required.

Business names can be applied for online at the CRO Web site for €20, http://www.core.ie. When applying for your business name online, the CRO will issue you with an electronic PDF receipt. Once you have been issued this receipt please proceed to register your .ie domain through this site and forward the PDF receipt to support@stormweb.ie. We will then secure your business names .ie domain.

Applicant Classes


IMPORTANT NOTE: All applicants applying for a .ie domain name who are not situated in the 32 counties of Ireland, must demonstrate a Real and Substantive Connection with Ireland (with the exception of those applying with a registered Community Trademark)

Examples of acceptable documentation demonstrating substantial trade or commercial activity within Ireland are as follows:

  • Copies of invoices (showing trade to or from Ireland)
  • High-quality brochures
  • A signed letter on headed paper from a bank manager, firm of chartered accountant(s), registered auditor(s), tax consultant(s) (where the tax advisor identification number is displayed), or solicitor(s) confirming the applicants trade with Ireland.

Personal Name:

There are 4 steps to successfully applying to register a Personal Domain Name.

1. Make sure your chosen domain name matches the correct format as listed below. Also ensure your chosen name is available by checking our domain search facility located on the main page.

N.B: It is NOT possible to have only your surname registered.

It is NOT possible to only register your first name.

It is NOT possible to register nicknames.

2. Check the list of requirements below and ensure you can supply the appropriate documentation.

If you are based in the republic:

  • Irish passport
  • Irish driver's licence
  • Irish revenue / social welfare document showing PPS number
  • Irish birth certificate
  • Irish marriage certificate
  • Irish utility bill (e.g.: NTL, Chorus, SKY / ESB, Airtricity / Bord Gais / Eircom / Vodafone, O2, Meteor, Three - bill pay phones only).

If you are based in Northern Ireland:

  • UK driver's licence with Northern Ireland address.
  • HM Revenue & Customs / Northern Ireland Social Security Agency document showing National Insurance number
  • Northern Ireland birth certificate
  • Northern Ireland marriage certificate
  • Northern Ireland utility bill (e.g.: NTL, Chorus, SKY, UTV Internet / NIE, Airtricity / British Gas / BT / Vodafone, O2, 3, T-Mobile, Orange, BT - bill pay phones only).

It is strongly recommends that applicants do NOT send original documents. Copies of the original documentation will be acceptable.

3. Submit the personal domain name you wish to register via our Web site.

4. Submit the supporting documentation by fax to 067 23846 or email support@stormweb.ie

Corporate Name:

We simply require the registered company number to be supplied in the remarks field of the application form.

Registered Trademark Name:

We require the Registered Trademark number (Irish, Community, British or American only) to be entered in the remarks field of the application form. All other Trademark holders must submit a copy of the Trademark certificate.

Registered Business Name:

We simply require that the Registered Business Name number is entered in the remarks of the application form.

State Agency Name:

No documentation is required provided that we can verify the applicant is a Statutory Body.

Publication Name:

Documentation proving the applicant is the owner of the publication e.g. A faxed copy of the page from the publication where the writer or publisher is clearly stated. In the case of Ezine publications, simply provide the link to the online publication.

School Name:

If the Educational Institution is recognised by the Department of Education no supporting information is required. Otherwise a letter on the applicants headed paper will suffice.

Politicians Name:

A signed letter, on official letterhead, from the politician confirming their eligibility to register a domain name in this category.

Unincorporated Association Name:

A self-issued letter from the applicant on the association's letterhead stating that they are an Unincorporated Association and require the domain name to reflect their organisation's name.

Personal Trading Name:

A letter from the applicant's solicitor, accountant or bank manager confirming that the applicant trades under their own name.

Discretionary Name:

We require a detailed letter from the applicant outlining their claim on the proposed domain name. If the applicant is a registered company or has a registered business name, please supply the registered numbers within the letter.
